What Is Manure Liquification?

Dec 07, 2023

It's no secret that manure is highly useful as a fertilizer. However, converting solid animal waste into a liquid form helps with properly and evenly applying the nutrients. This process is initiated through a manure liquifier. We'll take a closer look at the benefits of a manure liquifier in this blog post, but if you have any questions about treatment for municipal waste or other agricultural topics, feel free to get in touch with our team at B & S Research. We'd be happy to provide answers. Let's get started!

How Does Manure Liquification Work?

With manure liquification, it is possible to take solid animal (including human) waste and convert it into a nutrient-rich liquid. To do this, the manure will first undergo anaerobic digestion (AD). This means microbes will digest the waste in an oxygen-free environment. This produces biogas containing carbon dioxide, methane, and digestate, a nutrient-packed liquid that can be used as fertilizer.

The digestate can be further refined to remove solid waste particles. This can make the manure even easier to apply. Screens, centrifuges, and other methods may be used. The filtered liquid is called effluent, and it is packed with nutrients. Chemicals may also be added to further break down solids. Water can be added to make the solution more liquid.

Why Is Investing in a Manure Liquifier Important?

As plants are grown in the soil, they will slowly use up all the nutrients. Over time, this can result in the land becoming infertile, meaning that crops and other plants will struggle to grow in the soil. By using fertilizer, however, it's possible to enrich the soil and ensure that plants can access the needed nutrients to thrive.

There are over two million farms in the United States. Together, these farms employ approximately three million people, according to Stacker, a popular web publication. These farms produce much of the food human civilization relies on. However, without manure and other fertilizers, farms would struggle. Fortunately, it's possible to take what would otherwise be discarded waste, such as farm animal waste, and use a specially formulated treatment for municipal waste to turn it into a rich and effective fertilizer.
